Ged Classes In Chicago Illinois
To register for one of the free GED classes in Chicago, individuals will need to personally visit one of the campus locations. When arriving on campus, they need to have their social security number, proof of age (must be at least eighteen years old), and proof of address to prove themselves to be eligible for the course. A math and reading test is also mandatory, so individuals should allocate a two to three hour window in their schedules for the registration process.
The length of the GED preparation class will differ for every student. People who have more time or have more background knowledge will be able to successfully prepare for the GED exam is a less amount of time, compared to someone who has minimal time to study because of work. Also, students will be able to pace themselves according to their strengths and weaknesses. For example, if a person has more trouble with the math portion of the GED exam, then they will be able to spend more time practicing that section instead of wasting time on reading, which they are already good at.
If certain individuals fail to demonstrate strong academic abilities during the registration pretest, those people will be required to first enroll in an Adult Basic Education class, also known as ABE, prior to registering in a GED preparatory class. During an ABE class, people will have the opportunity to improve and develop basic skills in reading, writing, and math. Then, once they become proficient, the GED preparatory class will give them GED practice questions and teach them test taking techniques. So even if you walk in through the doors with no clue what is going on, the City Colleges of Chicago will still be able to help you earn the GED certification, given that you are willing to put in the work.
Established by volunteers in 1995, the Washington Park Youth Program is CYP’s largest community program which serves the high-need communities of Washington Park, Englewood, and surrounding areas.
WPYP operates in donated space at the University of Chicago and from our Community Center located at 5350 South Prairie in the Washington Park community. Completed in 2003 with the in-kind support of 18 Chicago area construction firms, our Community Center houses a tutoring room, library, pre-school area, gym, computer lab, garden, and outdoor playground.

Read to me (3-6 year olds) – Read to Me pairs children with an adult volunteer to provide one-on-one assistance with phonics skills and reading comprehension. PREP (Parent-Run Evening Preschool) – This program stresses the importance of parental involvement in their child’s education. Following the CYP-developed Path to Reading curriculum, parents systematically and effectively teach their children to read, which gaining positive parenting skills and building their own self-esteem.
Tutoring
SCORE Tutoring I, II, and III (1st-6th grade) & Teen Tutoring (7th – 9th grade) – SCORE tutoring programs provide one-on-one assistance to youth, focusing on establishing healthy, trustworthy relationships between tutors and tutees. These programs utilize “Concept Packages”, a tool developed by CYP in collaboration with Chicago Public School teachers, which empower tutors to identify and teach critical, grade-specific concepts which their student is struggling with.
