'If you're a fan of Tamil movies, Hotstar is definitely you're go-to place where you are going to want to have bookmarked. I've used Hotstar to catch up on my favorite Indian movies. The streaming service isn't perfect, and you can't download everything, but you won't find a better free site for playing Tamil movies.'

Rangaswamy Nataraja Mudaliar is the father of Tamil cinema and a pioneer of the South Indian film industry. Originally a merchant for automobile spare parts, he became interested in motion pictures after he watched films by the father of Indian Cinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke. He founded the Indian Film Company, the first South Indian film studio in 1917. The first movie that he produced, directed, and filmed was Keechaka Vadham, a silent film that was released in 1917. It was the first film ever made in South India, with over 6000-feet worth of film and title cards written in Tamil, Hindi, and English. The Hindi title cards were written by Mahatma Ghandi’s youngest son, Devdas Ghandi. It is considered to be the first Tamil movie as most of the cast members were Tamil people. Unfortunately, no copy of the movie survived. The first Tamil “talkie,” or the first movie with audible dialogue, wasn’t until the movie Kalidas was released in 1931. Mudaliar spent only six years of his life dedicated to films. He retired from the industry when his son died in a fire accident. He was able to make only seven films in total, but his influence to other film-makers is evident in other pioneers in Indian cinema: Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu, the father of Telugu cinema, and J.C. Daniel, the father of Malayalam cinema.
