    There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it.

    A well-crafted, great looking adventure, with some spirited performances!

    Action-packed, fun.

    Spectacle, rowdy adventure and supernatural horror all crammed into a raucous two hours of high-testosterone special-effects filmmaking!

    ... the script is almost too tongue-in-cheek for its own good, but Sommers' thrill a minute cliffhanger is a tribute, a parody, and a high energy period adventure all in one.

    A raucous and entertaining action horror entry with great performances, and a vicious villain.

    It revels in its own retro-ness, and it's a hell of a lot of fun.

    An unpretentious pulp adventure...

    Director Stephen Sommers has a kind of soulless, leaden touch, with none of the sleek, sprightly fun this kind of movie requires.

    it's easy to fall back on self-conscious humor. But if, as the author, you have to keep interrupting your story to remind the audience how dumb the material is, what's the point of telling the tale in the first place?
